Its aim was to promote cross-cultural musical diversity, encouraging social unity, and empowering the creativity of the migrant population through their music, with interview and report segments. This station demonstrates that intercultural fusion is endless, hence the name Pi.

The number of radio listeners reached between 2018-202 was: 1,300.

Radio FUSION PEOPLE aimed to improve social unification, equality, inclusivity, and citizen involvement, and to strengthen ties between diverse cultures and genders. This radio programme was born out of the need to build bridges between cultures.

The Fusion People programme sought intercultural participation opportunities. During the FUSION GRAMENET 2019 event, interviews were held with various singers from the Raval neighbourhood who attended the Raval Neighbourhood Festival in Santa Coloma de Gramenet.

Radio Pi as an independent radio station launched in 2017. Its founders were radio broadcasters and producers: Gustavo Romero (Argentina), Harold Lainez (Honduras) and Ramiro Boero (Argentina), in collaboration with Lucas Barrios from New Orleans radio McIntosh. In 2018, Association Open Art formed a partnership with its founders, Ramiro and Harold, to collaborate and provide a base for the station in Barcelona.

Nowadays, Radio Pi is an independent radio station that provides coverage of contemporary cultural diversity of 5 continents.

CAROLINA RIVAS

About the author

Carolina Rivas is a well-known filmmaker and writer in the international film scene. Her critical wit and humanist spirit are distinguishing characteristics of her work. She studied at the Sogem School of Writers in Mexico and at the National School of Cinematographic Arts (ENAC, formerly CUEC) within the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She studied drama and Butoh dance. After her short film Zone Zero (ENAC-UNAM, 2003), which was selected at the Cannes Film Festival, she has received an array of awards throughout her career. The Color of Olives (2006) won Best Documentary Direction at Golden Minbar, Russia, as well as Courage in Filmmaking at the Women Film Critics Circle Awards, USA; Lessons for Zafirah (co-directed with Daoud Sarhandi, 2011) won Best Film at the Latin American Film Festival van Vlaanderen, Belgium. In 2012, Rivas collaborated as member of the jury at the Documenta Madrid festival. In 2015, she founded Videovalores, a series of short films which portray universal values. A short film in this series, Grietas (Dyaa Naim, 2019), received the Plural+ Youth and Video Festival Award in New York. She is the founder of the production company Creadores Contemporáneos in Mexico and the chairperson of Open Art cultural association in Spain. She currently lives in Barcelona.

Film Step by Step: A Method of Self-Knowledge displays Carolina Rivas’ step-by-step process of her film since her first two short films, Zone Zero (ENAC-UNAM, 2003), selected at the Cannes Film Festival, and Life is Amputated Dry (ENAC-UNAM, 1995), up until her three feature films, The Color of Olives (2006), Lessons for Zafirah (2011) and 1 For 1(2013). The directing methodology as well as the creative process of her work are discussed thoroughly in this book.*

Rivas presents her directing methodology as a proposal to guide the creation of a film, which she calls “self-knowledge methodology”. This methodology consists of identifying two distinct natures in the creation process: the filmmaker’s nature and the dramatic universe’s nature. Both natures complement each other to articulate, scene by scene, a powerfully unique film.

Film Step by Step gathers methodology-related documents, such as original production folders, scripts, shooting notes, visual research, templates, photographs, storyboards, graphics, terminology and secret directing and editing tools. In a simple and practical way, this book shares the filmmaker’s private creative laboratory with the reader.

The content showcased in this book is a unique comparative study between the process of creation and the finished film. The main takeaway of this book is that it’s important to not only have a life experience to share but also to find a methodology.

* For readers only: a link is provided to watch the author’s films online.

“This book delivers a way to tear the old empire of film, where only the “chosen” or the “geniuses”, whose creative processes are secretly guarded, can break through. Nowadays, any young person with a phone camera can be a filmmaker. What is usually missing is a methodology that works. The “self-knowledge methodology” that Rivas suggests introduces a practical revelation in the way films are made”.

Daoud Sarhandi, filmmaker and editor of Film Step by Step

“Carolina Rivas is an excellent example of a filmmaker who clearly shares with us her way of seeing the world, leading us to a deep reflection on the contemporary through a simple story”.

Juan Mora Catlett, filmmaker and professor at ENAC and CCC.

“Film, guided by self-knowledge, is a powerful tool for personal expression and a social artefact that reveals the way we exist. The importance of self-knowledge applied to film lies in providing answers to the two greatest mysteries that arise when making a film: “what” is to be told and “how” does one want to tell it. These answers show a unique visual and sound path based on the filmmaker’s own life experiences. Self-knowledge implies going on a treasure hunt, that of one’s own style, the hallmark that defines a film director. I believe that in this current era, with technology available to everyone, anyone is capable of becoming a filmmaker with just a phone camera. Because of this, it is essential to me to communicate the importance of having a guide to making a film. Film Step by Step exists for this very reason: it is a useful book to learn about the creative spirit of a film and the responsibility of making good film with your own hallmark. Nowadays, we don’t need more films, we need better films”. Carolina Rivas

REPAIR CAFÉ BARCELONA is an activity related to the concept of circular economy, which consists of repairing broken objects, such as household appliances, electronic and computer equipment. It is a creative and empowering activity, carried out whilst having a coffee. The goal of this activity is to promote a change in our consumption habits through repairing items, and to empower communities with self-repairing skills, so that the negative impact on the environment can be subdued. This initiative was originally conceived in Amsterdam and has more than 2,093 locations worldwide already. Open Art is the first association in Barcelona to have obtained the license from Repair Café.org, Amsterdam, to open a Repair Café in Barcelona.

INTRODUCTION

The activity consists of free repair workshops for household appliances and computer equipment. This activity is aligned with the principle of circular economy at Open Art Association. It was originally part of a larger project called OBJECT BANK, which consisted of exchanging objects, repairing damaged ones and transforming waste into Object Art. Repair Café Barcelona started in 2019 and to date has held 23 sessions, has welcomed 380 attendees (virtually and face-to-face) and has repaired a total of 133 objects. REPAIR CAFÉ BARCELONA is a worldwide-known member of the Repair initiatives. It is a member of Repair Café.org (Netherlands) and the Restarters (UK). The Repair Café workshops are directed by Carolina Rivas, coordinated by Daoud Sarhandi and conducted by Andreu León de Cabo Sindín. SUMMARY

REPAIR CAFÉ BARCELONA is an initiative of OPEN ART association. It was conceived in 2019 as a circular economy activity that was part of a larger project, called OBJECT BANK, which consisted of a library of objects to share, to repair damaged ones (Repair Café) and to transform waste items into art (Art Object Trend). This project was subsidised by Barcelona Activa 2018-2019. Nonetheless, when the subsidy came to an end the community insisted that the activity continued, and so Repair Café continued to be carried out in many venues in Barcelona. Repair Café was founded by Carolina Rivas and Daoud Sarhandi and is conducted by Andreu León de Cabo Sindín, who is the official repairperson of this initiative. Currently Repair Café is carried out in collaboration with the Aula Ambiental of Barcelona and with the support of Nau Vila de Besòs, Coworking Sinergics Baró de Viver and Endeos, amongst other entities. To date (March 2022) we have conducted 23 repair sessions, we have had 380 virtual and face-to-face participants and 7 repair volunteers (5 men and 2 women) have collaborated. Repair Café has also been made possible online and remotely by sharing photographs, videos and voice audios. In total,  133 objects have been repaired, which has reduced the CO2 impact by 0.002%, and 4 repaired computers have been sent to The Gambia, Africa.

Awards granted to Repair Café and the Object Bank: in 2019, we received the MIT (Make a Impact on Tomorrow) Award, granted by the Henkel Foundation.

Repair Café Barcelona is also an official member of Restarters UK. It has also welcomed the collaboration of 36 circular and social economy entities, which include: Barcelona Activa, Coworking Sinergics Baró de Viver, Aula Ambiental, Nau Vila de Besos, Fundación Servei Solidari and Restarters of Barcelona. More recently, Repair Café has also collaborated with Tabakalera in Donostia, San Sebastián, as well as to the worldwide study on appliances repairing, carried out by Imperial College London.

This activity is conducted by: Andreu León De Cabo Sindín. Directed by: Carolina Rivas. Coordinated internationally by: Daoud Sarhandi

The Repair Café sessions are scheduled quarterly in various locations.

To date (March 2022) we have managed to:

Repair 133 objects

Hold 23 sessions
